Apr 19, 1971: Walter Fauntroy was sworn in as the 1st District of Columbia Delegate to the U.S. House of Representatives in nearly 100yrs, making him the 1st African American to hold the position since Reconstruction. Elected following the 1970 D.C. Delegate Act, he was a key civil rights activist and a founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus.
