Mission and Editorial Principle
HistorianSpeaks is an independent digital publication dedicated to African American and global Black history, contemporary social justice, and political analysis. Our mission is to provide rigorous, accessible scholarship that centers the agency, political organizing, and lived experiences of everyday people across the global Black world.
Every essay, report, feature, and archival dossier published under our imprint reflects the intellectual direction, historical standards, and editorial values of our founder, Dr. Stephen G. Hall, and our editorial staff.
Use of Computational Research and AI Tools
Modern digital scholarship requires both depth and responsiveness. To maintain comprehensive daily coverage, analyze complex policy documents, and track global events, HistorianSpeaks integrates contemporary digital research and computational language tools into our newsroom and research workflows. Our use of these technologies adheres to strict editorial boundaries:
- Human Conception and Direction: No article, chapter, or report is generated autonomously. Every piece originates from our editorial calendar, curated research frameworks, and the scholarly hypotheses established by our editorial team.
- Computational Assistance in Workflow: We utilize computational tools for structured research tasks, including document collation, data aggregation (such as electoral returns, legislative rolls, and census figures), initial drafting synthesis, and preliminary copyediting.
- Rigorous Fact-Checking and Primary Verification: Computational tools are never treated as authoritative sources. Every factual assertion, timeline, biographical record, and statistical claim is cross-referenced against vetted primary documents, archival repositories, peer-reviewed historical literature, or direct reportage.
- Scholarly Voice and Editorial Oversight: All prose undergoes human review, line editing, and revision prior to publication. Final authority over tone, analytical framing, historiographical context, and attribution rests solely with human editors.
Authorship, Accountability, and Bylines
- Staff and Collective Bylines: Articles published under the collective byline “HistorianSpeaks” represent the unified research and editorial efforts of our newsroom, produced under the direct supervision of Dr. Stephen G. Hall. We accept full editorial and legal accountability for all content published under this imprint.
- External Contributors: Individual bylines are reserved for external scholars, journalists, and community organizers. Guest contributors warrant that their work represents original human analysis and must disclose any material use of automated tools during their research or drafting process.
- No Machine Authorship: We do not grant bylines to generative models, automated agents, or synthetic tools, as algorithms cannot bear intellectual, moral, or legal responsibility for published ideas.
Visual Media and Archival Integrity
- Archival Photography and Artwork: We prioritize authenticated historical photographs, public-domain archival materials, community documentation, and credited original photography. Archival images are never altered, composited, or manipulated with generative tools to distort historical reality.
- Illustrative and Data Visualizations: Maps, infographics, and conceptual cover artwork created with the aid of digital design software are clearly contextualized and verified against empirical geographic and demographic datasets.
Books and Print Publications
Monographs, readers, and special volumes published through HistorianSpeaks Press or submitted to partner academic and trade presses conform to standard peer-review, copyright, and publishing ethics:
- Every book manuscript is personally vetted, curated, and substantively shaped by Dr. Stephen G. Hall.
- Where computational tools assisted in document compilation or initial synthesis across earlier published blog series, full transparency is maintained in the volume's front matter and methodological acknowledgments.
- All intellectual property, legal warranties of originality, and analytical conclusions belong to the human author.
