An American minister and Civil Rights icon, Sherrod helped to found the Albany Movement and served as field secretary of the Southwest Chapter of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). He was also a participant in the Selma Voting Rights Movement in 1965. Sherrod later founded the Southwest Georigia Project for Community Education. He also received a Master's degree in sacred theology from Union Theological Seminary. Sherrod's activism continued as a member of the Albany City Council from 1976 to 1990. He also served as a Chaplain at Georgia State Prison in Homerville and as a teacher at Albany State University. He died on October 11, 2022
