Esther Cooper Jackson (1917-2022) was a Social Worker and Civil Rights activist. She worked closely with W.E.B. DuBois and Shirley Graham DuBois. She was a founding editor of Freedomways, an important literary, theoretical, and political magazine in the Black freedom struggle. The magazine was published between 1961 and 1985. Jackson also served as the Executive Secretary of the Southern Negro Youth Conference. Her work in the South challenging segregation in the postwar period laid the groundwork for the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s and 1960s. She was a graduate of Oberlin College and Fisk University.
