Charlene Mitchell (1930-2022) was a prominient civil rights activist, labor leader, feminist and presidential candidate. In 1968, she became the first Black woman to run for President of the United States. She ran on the Communist Party of America Ticket. In the 1970's, she was active in the defense of Angela Davis, Joan Little and the Wilmington Ten. In 1972, she also founded the National Alliance Against Racial and Political Repression. A stuanch opponent of Aartheid in South Africa, she took a close interest in the plight of Nelson Mandela. She later served as an official international observer of the first democratic elections in post-apartheid South Africa. Mitchell remained active in the Communist Party throughout her life. She died on December 14, 2022 in New York City.
