Walter Rodney, despite his tragic assassination in 1980 in Georgetown, Guyana, remains one of the foremost Black intellectuals of the twentieth century. Rodney was trained at the University College of the West Indies as an undergraduate and received a PhD from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London, England. Rodney is best known for his pathbreaking scholarship: Groundings with My Brothers (1969); A History of the Upper Guinea Coast (1970); How Europe Underdeveloped Africa (1972); and History of the Guyanese Working People, 1881-1905, among others. Rodney taught at the several universities in his lifetime including the University of Dar es Salaam (Tanzania); and the University of West Indies (Mona, Jamaica). Rodney was heavily involved in politics in Guyana. He was active in the Working People's Alliance (WPA). He worked to build multiracial coalitions among Guyana's diverse populations. Rodney was assassinated by a car bomb in Georgetown, Guyana in 1980.
