George Washington Williams was one of a many Black historians in the 19th century. Not unlike Black historians in this period, Williams was a soldier in the Civil War, a minister, politician, lawyer, journalist. He is best known for his historical writings. He is best known for his work, History of the Negro Race in America from 1619 to 1800. 2 vols (1882) and A History of the Negro Troops in the War of the Rebellion, 1861-1864 (1887). Williams also inaugurated the international human rights movement through his work in the Belgian Congo. He wrote a highly publicized letter to King Leopold of Belgium regarding the atrocities in the Belgium Congo. Williams' "An Open Letter to His Majesty Leopold II, King of the Belgians and Sovereign of the Independent State of Congo," published in 1890 was widely disseminated and generated a great deal of attention, which ultimately led to the loss of Leopold's control over the Congo.
