Juneteenth is a excellent example of the way in which African Americans celebrate freedom becoming a part of the national conversation. Although celebrated in different forms by African Americans for more than 150 years, the recognition by the federal government of the holiday has been a important milestone. It not only acknowledges the death knell of slavery, but the role that African Americans played in bringing it to an end. Designated by different names including Freedom Day, Emancipation Day and Jubilee Day. Initially localized to Texas and then spreading throughout the South, the celebration took on a wide variety of forms. With the advent of the Great Migration, the celebration spread throughout the nation. In 2021, Juneteenth was declared a federal holiday. Below please find our informational blog on Juneteenth.
