Nathan Hare (1933-2024) was an African American sociologist. Hare is widely viewed as the "father of Black Studies." He was fired from Howard University in 1967 for agitating for a Black University and extending an invitation to Muhammad Ali to speak at the university. Ali's stance on the Vietnam War was viewed as controversial by Howard's administration, Hare was recruited to San Francisco State University in 1968 where he constructed the first department of Black Studies. He later founded The Black Scholar with Robert Chrisman, founded the Black Think Tank and published with his wife, Dr. Julia Hare a number of books about Black families and history. Hare was a graduate of Langston University and the University of Chicago. He also published numerous studies, among the most popular was The Black Anglo- Saxons.
