This informational blog focuses on Jazz Poetry. Jazz and poetry are a natural combination given the improvisionational nature of both genres. This genre takes jazz music, musicians or the jazz milieu as its subject. Originially conceived by African Americans during the Harlem Renaissance, and further developed as part of the counterculture in the 1950's and 1960's by counterculture poets such as the Beats, jazz poetry has become a staple. Currently, the form has evolved in hip-hop music and in poetry slams known as Spoken word contests.
