Independent Black Bookstores

The Black Press and Black Bookstores in the modern period have served as repositories for Black thought. Black boostores are often the gateway to deepening and broadening understanding of the Black past and present. These bokstores also serve as gathering places and sites for critical engagement with Black community issues. One of the best known bookstores was Liberation Bookstore. The store existed in Harlem, NY for more than 40 years. It was run by Una Mulzac and it inspired generations of activists and students as well as everyday folks who wanted to learn more about the Black experience.
