The Black Studies in Britain seminar series explores what Black Studies means in the UK: it’s contestations, methodologies, frameworks and creative interventions. Organised by Amber Lascelles, Lewi Mondal and Carmen Andall Woodroofe, we aim to create a space for research exchange and collaboration with University of London consortia and beyond academia.
We aim to reflect on questions such as: o What are the methods shaping Black Studies in the UK? o In what ways might such methods connect with African diasporic epistemologies? o How do we characterise dialogue between U.S. Black Studies and British contexts? o How do we honour or challenge the legacies of Black Studies in Britain?
Our first seminar on 12 February, 6-8pm, will take place in Room 104, Senate House, University of London. It focuses on the concept of ‘Spaces’ framed by the question: how do Black people in Britain resist spatial injustice?
Dr Aleema Gray, a curator, researcher and public historian, Lead Curator for Beyond the Bassline: 500 years of Black British Music at the British Library and the founder of HOUSE OF DREAD an anti-disciplinary heritage studio. The talk is titled ‘Capture Land: Rastafari and the Reclaiming of St Agnes Place’. Dr Nathaniel Telemaque, Lecturer in Geography and Social Justice at King’s College London, focuses on centering and framing everyday Black experiences via the utilisation of collaborative photographic practices. The talk is titled ‘Black Studies Influences on a Black British Photographic Practice’.
