The term Black Indians is used in reference to the affliations between persons of African descent and Native Americans. The most significant association in the United States is with the Five Civilized tribes (Creek, Choctaw, Seminoles, Chickasaw and Cherokee). These groups enslaved African Americans and after forcible removal from the American Southeast during the Trail of Tears in the 1830s Most settled in territory designated for Native Americans west of the Mississippi. These nations joined the Confederacy during the Civil War ( with the exception of Seminoles who supported the Union in the Western lands and the Confedracy in the trans-Mississpi area). These groups were restored to the Union in the aftermath of the Civil War.
