Afro Cubans and the Diversity of the Cuban Landscape

Afro or Black Cubans play an important role in Cuban society. The term Afro Cuban refers to Cubans of african descent. It is beleived that more than 11% of the Cuban population identifies as Afro Cuban. More than three million people identify as mulatto or mestizo. This means that about 40% of the Cuban population acknowledges some African identity. This community has played an important role in influencing religion, music, language, arts and culture.
