On 4 January 1938, 4-500 workers at the Serge Island estate in St Thomas, Jamaica, forced a general work stoppage on the farm. They were demanding pay increases before they would start reaping crops. Police sent in by British colonial authorities began to break the strike, arresting 63 workers, and tried them over 3 days from 13 January. Three accused "ringleaders" were given one month's imprisonment with hard labour, 18 were fined and the others discharged.
