On December 18, 1865, the Thirteenth Amendent, which abolished slavery and involuntary servitude, except as punishment a crime, was ratified by 27 of 36 states on December 6th and proclaimed on December 18th.
The amendment was passed by the Senate on April 8, 1864.
The 13th Amendment is one of three Reconsturction amendments. The other two are the 14th and 15th amendments.
Since its ratification, the 13th Amendment has been cited numerous times in case law.
It has been used to strike down peonage, and race based discrimination.
The 13th Amendment has also been used in sex-trafficking cases.
