The Black Panther was one of the most significant Black nationalist organzations to emerge during the Civil Rights Movement (1954-1968). Founded by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale in Oakland, California in 1966, the Black Panthers combined Black nationalist principles of self-respect, cultural awareness, community uplift and enpowerment and opposition to police brutuality with the domestic and international liberation of Black people. In addition to promoting armed self-defense and community patrols, the Panthers organized a newspaper, The Black Panther, created the foundation for the Free Breakfast program, promoted freedom schools and educational opportunities for inner city youth and sought to heighten awareness of African American conidtions in the urban centers.Constantly persecuted by law enforcement, many members of the Panthers were arrested and incarcerated repeatedly in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Black women such as Elaine Brown who played an integral role in the organization from its outset guided the organizaiton into the 1970s.
