Julian Bond (1940-2015) was an important participant in the Civil Rights Movement. A graduate of Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, he was one of the fiunding members of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), which was formed in 1960. In 1971, he co-founded The Southern Poverty Law Center and served as its president for the first decade of the center's existence. He later served in the Georgia House of Representatives for four terms and in the Georgia State Senate for six terms . He later served as Chairman of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).
