On 18 December 2012, armed forces in Sierra Leone shot several striking miners, killing two of them. The miners had walked out against non-payment of bonuses, against racism and for better conditions at the foreign-owned diamond mine. In the wake of the shootings a police station was set on fire and local taxi drivers joined the strike in solidarity.
