On 25 December 1522, a Muslim-led revolt occured in Santo Domingo against Christopher Columbus' son, Diego, on his sugar plantation. Armed with the machetes they used to cut cane, these rebels, including enslaved West African Muslims, succeeded in killing a number of colonial settlers before the insurrection was quelled; of the 15 bodies recovered, nine were Europeans. Many of the insurgents managed to escape to the mountains where they formed independent communities among the Indigenous Taíno people.
