On 22 April 1993, Stephen Lawrence, a Black British teenager, was murdered in a racist attack while he waited for a bus in Eltham, London.
Rather than devote adequate resources to finding the killers, instead the London Metropolitan Police infiltrated the Lawrence family's campaign for justice in order to find ways to smear and discredit the family. However, ultimately years of campaigning forced the government to acknowledge the institutional racism of the police force, and two of the killers were eventually convicted in 2012.
