On 14 April 1775, the first organisation for the abolition of slavery was formed in the United States, in the Rising Sun tavern, Philadelphia.
French Quaker and educator Anthony Benezet and others set up the Society for the Relief of Free Negroes Unlawfully Held in Bondage.
