Seydou Ba: A New Voice of France's Student Uprising

In the fall of 2026, as high school blockades spread from the Paris suburbs across France, a handful of young people became the public faces of a movement that had no official leaders. One of them is Seydou Ba, a 17-year-old student from Rosny-sous-Bois, a town in Seine-Saint-Denis, the working-class department just east of Paris.

A class delegate turned organizer

Ba — full name Seydou Simbo Ba — is the elected delegate of his senior-year class (terminale D, the final year of French high school), a race he won with 82 percent of the vote according to a campaign poster on his Instagram and has a large following on social media, including his Instagram page. According to TMC's Quotidien, he helped prepare the blockade of his own high school before joining the demonstrators at the Bastille, the Paris square that recalls the 1789 storming of the royal prison and remains a symbolic gathering place for protest. There he met Bally Bagayoko, the mayor of Saint-Denis.

Ba is openly political. He is active with the youth wing of La France insoumise (LFI, "France Unbowed"), the left-wing party led by Jean-Luc Mélenchon, through the Jeunes insoumis in Rosny-sous-Bois.

"Our youth suffers the policies of people it did not elect"

The movement began in mid-September 2026. Newspapers including La Croix described how it was born spontaneously in the near suburbs of Paris and grew to mobilize hundreds of thousands of students nationwide. Students denounced teacher shortages, crumbling school buildings, and police treatment of protesters.

On October 12, Ba appeared on France 5's C ce soir alongside the historian Pierre Rosanvallon and the pollster Jérôme Fourquet, debating whether the autumn protests deserve comparison with May 1968, the student and worker revolt that shook France. His words gave the broadcast its headline: "Our youth suffers the policies of people it did not elect." He said the mobilization would continue until high schools receive real resources, including more staff and health care, and until Parcoursup, the national online system that sorts students into universities, is suspended.

Why he matters

Ba's prominence says something about modern France. A Black teenager of West African descent from the banlieue, the suburbs often portrayed in French media only through crime and unrest, is now speaking on national television as a voice for an entire generation. His rise sits alongside other young figures, such as Soumaya Sarré of Bondy, who are reshaping who speaks for French youth. American readers may recognize the pattern: students from neglected schools turning their frustrations into a national political argument. Clips celebrating him now circulate on social media, including a widely shared Facebook video marveling that "this Seydou Ba boy" is only 17 and already leading his high school's mobilization.

Whether the movement wins its demands remains to be seen. The October 17 national day of action will be the next test. But Seydou Ba has already shown that the young people most often talked about can speak for themselves.
