Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe (1924-1978) was a South African revolutionary best known as a founding member of the South African ati-apartheid Pan Africanist Congress (PAC). He served as the first president of the organization. He advocated for an Africanist future, which meant political collaboration could only occur with "anyone who lives in and pays allegiance to Africa and is prepared to subject themselves to African majority rule." He believed in "Africa for the Africans." Sobukwe's opposition to the pass laws led to three years imprisonment in 1960. The enactment of the Sobukwe clause in 1963 led to to an indefinite renewal of his prison sentence. He was released from Robben Island after six years and placed under house arrest. He died in house arrest in 1978.
