Robert Lee Allen (1942-2024) was an important theorist in the Black liberation struggle and a chronicler of the African American experience. He was a Adjunct Professor of African American Studies at the University of California Berkeley. He was co-editor with Robert Chrisman of The Black Scholar and best known for his work, Black Awakening in Capitalist America: An Analytic History (1969) and The Port Chicago Mutiny: The story of the Largest Mass Mutiny in U.S. Naval History (1989). Allen played a central role in the eventual exoneration of the 50 Black soldiers involved in the mutiny. He died at the age of 82.
