Eric Dolphy (1928-1964) was a famous American jazz musician who played multiple instruments: alto saxophone, bass, clarinet and flute. He was a pioneer in the use of bass clairnet, alto saxophone and the flute in jazz music. He was an improvisationist and pioneered in free jazz. During the 1950s and 1960s, he played an important role in influencing the development of avant-garde jazz. His playing style was characterized by wide interval leaps and unorthodox note to chord relationships. He died of a diabetic coma in Berlin, Germany in 1964. Treatment was delayed because the doctors thought he was a drug addict, but Dolphy did not use drugs or alcohol.
