On September 16th 1928, a Category 4 hurricane came ashore in South Forida. Its storm surge was more than 10 feet. Heavy wins piled up water at the south end of Lake Okeechobee, producing a 6 to 9 foot lake surge.
The lake surge topped a 4 to 5 fot levee and water flooded the towns of Bean City, Belle Glade, Chosen, Pahokee and South Bay.
The death toll is estimated at 2,500. Most of these individuals were Black migrant farm workers (African American and Bahamian). More than 600 victims are buried in segregated mass graves with no marker.
