On 13 October 1990, the first South African pride parade was held near the end of the apartheid era in Johannesburg, considered the first pride event on the continent. Organised by the Gay and Lesbian Organisation of the Witwatersrand (GLOW), 800 people attended and they who were addressed by multiple speakers. One such speaker was gay anti-apartheid activist Simon Nkoli (pictured), who said in his speech: "I'm fighting for the abolition of apartheid. And I fight for the right of freedom of sexual orientation. These are inextricably linked with each other. I cannot be free as a Black man if I am not free as a gay man."
