TD Nov 12, 1996: The city of Nicodemus, Kansas, was designated a national historical site by the U.S. National Park Service. The city was founded in 1877 by 6 African Americans who recruited others to join them. One of the primary leaders of migration was Benjamin “Pap” Singleton. Established by formerly enslaved Blacks after the Civil War. The town is a symbol of the strength and perseverance of Blacks who sought freedom and a new life in the American West.
