Dr. Mustafa Santiago Ali is the Executive Vice President of Conservation & Justice for the National Wildlife Federation (NWF), former Interim Chief of Programs at the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS), and Instructor at American University. He is the Founder and CEO of Revitalization Strategies. He also serves as a commissioner for The American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AAAS). He is an award-winning writer and poet focused on social justice. like a phoenix from the asphalt,

transforming hardwood into holy ground,
where you danced with destiny,
a choreography of dreams, of drive, of unyielding fire.
We watched you transcend,
not just the game, but the gravity of being,
you broke the sound barrier of expectation,
turned doubt into fuel, turned defeat into myth,
left the impossible hanging in the air,
like the final shot, swish—net, nothing but belief.
But beyond the stats, the glory, the banners,
you were the poet, the father, the sage,
speaking in tongues of perseverance,
in the language of mambas and mountains,
where the climb is never over,
where the summit is just another starting point.
On this day, we don’t just remember you,
we conjure you—your spirit a spell we cast
to remind us what it means to be relentless,
to be human, to be flawed and still flawless,
to fight with grace, to love with abandon,
to live in the now and forever.
You are the constellation we navigate by,
