On December 2th 1859: Abolitionist John Brown was executed by hanging in Charles Town, VA, for treason after leading the failed raid on the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry. His execution, viewed as a martyr's death in the North and a villain's in the South, intensified the sectional bitterness that escalated toward the American Civil War.
