


On 12 February 1946, Isaac Woodard, a 26-year-old Black, uniformed World War II veteran, was take to jail, beaten, and permanently blinded by police in South Carolina after a small verbal altercation with a white bus driver. Eventually the police chief who beat Woodard was indicted and went to trial in federal court in South Carolina, but he was acquitted by an all-white jury. A historical marker was errected in 2019 in honor of Woodard in Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina.
