On 24 September 1973, the unilateral independence of Guinea-Bissau was proclaimed. It was only recognized by Portugal, the colonizing country, months after the Portuguese revolution, in 25 April 1974. Since 1963, the African Party for the Independence of Guiné and Cabo Verde (PAIGC) fought Portuguese troops for Guiné-Bissau's independence, managing to pose a threat and strongly resist the Portuguese military strength. The resistance forces had the international support of Cuba and the USSR. The independence was proclaimed by "Nino" Vieira, president of the national popular assembly of PAIGC. The first president of Guiné was Luis Cabral, Amílcar Cabral's half brother, until 1980.
