Amilcar Cabral, Born in 1924

On 12 September 1924 anticolonial leader Amílcar Cabral was born in Bafatá, Guinea-Bissau. Under Portuguese colonialism, Cabral founded and led the Partido Africano da Independência da Guiné e Cabo Verde (PAIGC), which helped organise strikes for better pay and conditions. After a massacre of striking dock workers in 1959, the PAIGC adopted a strategy of guerrilla warfare in the countryside.

Cabral was assassinated in 1973, but the following year, during the Portuguese revolution, the PAIGC formally declared independence.
