This informational blog commemorates the work of Gloria Richardson. Richardson was a member a member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SCLC) and the leader of the Cambridge movement during the early 1960s in Cambridge, Maryland. Richardson led sit-ins to protest discriminatory conditions. When the peaceful protest turned violent, martial law was declared and Richardson was asked by Maryland Governor to end the demonstration in exchange for not arresting protestors. She refused to do so and stated she did not believe in nonviolence. Richardson eventually met with Attorney General Robert Kennedy to negotiate what became known as the "Cambridge Treaty." She was the first Black woman to lead a prolonged Civil Rights demonstration outside of the Deep South. Richardson died quietly in her sleep on Thursday in New York City. She was 99 years old.
