Gil Scott-Heron (1949-2011) was an American singer, musician and jazz poet. He is a pioneer in spoken word poetry and achieved fame during the 1970s and 1980s. He considered himself a "bluesologist" because his work fused jazz, blues, and soul to provide commentary on social and political issues of the period. His poems The Revolution Will Not Be Televised and Whitey on the Moon are widely considered to be a major influence on hip-hop music.
