Fred Hampton (August 30, 1948 – December 4, 1969) served as chairman of the Illinois Chapter of the Black Panther Party. Hampton was known for his progressive work in brokering a nonaggresion pact between Chicago's most powerful gangs. He also worked to form intraracial and interracial coalitions between the Young Patriots, an organization of white Southerners and the Young Lords, an organization compromised primarily of Latinos. Idenitified as a radical threat by the FBI as early as 1968. Hampton was targeted. In a predawn raid in 1969, Hampton was murdered in his bed along with Peter Clark, a fellow Black Panther.
