Emmett Till, Martyr: The Beginnings of Black Lives Matter

The murder of Emmett Till in 1955 confounded the nation. While it highlighted the sadistic and brutal nature of the Jim Crow system, it also placed Black children and their lives at the center of the Civil Rights movement. The tireless and unrelenting effort of Mamie Till to not only highlight the brutality of these events, but provide documentation and sway public opinion to fight for justice for her son are nothing short of remarkable.
