On 18 February 1957, Kenyan independence fighter Dedan Kimathi was executed in Kamiti Maximum Security Prison in Nairobi by British colonial authorities.

Kimathi was the leader of Mau Mau independence fighters in the Nyandarua and Aberdare forests. He was also a leader in the Kenya Parliament and Kenya Defence Council.

He was shot by police and captured in October 1956, and after a seven-day trial he was convicted of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, and sentenced to death.
