I was scared to cut ties with the mother.
She nurtured me and took care of me
But I am not longer a child
I am a new born
Fresh out the womb ready to be
Cut from my umbilical cord
The doctor hands me the knife
He says it’s “Time to cut the cord”
It’s time to stand alone
It’s time to grow up
It’s time to be your own woman
I hesitate as I move forward near the cord
I needed to cross over the finish line
I needed to do this not only for myself
But for my son
With a scared hesitation as to what might happen
I decided to cut the cord
Detaching my dependence
I cried a new born cry because I was scared
But I held myself
I sowed up my mother
Taking care of her wounds.
The baby stopped crying.
She started to figure it out.
At first the new lights scared her
But then her eyes adjusted
