Bishop Desmond Tutu died in South Africa today at the age of 90. Tutu was instrumental in the opposition which overturned the Apartheid system in South Africa. Apartheid, literally translated as apartness, instituted a system of legalized segregation and marginalization of the majority African populations in South Africa in 1948. This system crumbled under the sustained protest of leaders like Desmond Tutu and Nelson and Winnie Mandela and countless. others. The movement garnered international attention from the outset. This attention catalyzed into a global Anti-Apartheid movement. The movement called for divestment by multinational corporations and severe economic and moral sanctions on the country. Apartheid's collapse led to the ascendancy of Nelson Mandela as the first president of South Africa in 1994 subsequently led to the formation of the Truth and Reconciliation Committee in 1995. Tutu, an Anglican Bishop, took the lead in this project. It subsequently became an international model for other countries. Tutu served as Bishop of Johannesburg in 1985 and became Archbishop of Cape Town in 1986. He was the first African to hold this position in the Anglican church. Tutu blended Black theology and African theology. He was vocal in his support for gay marriage, voiced opposition to the Iraqi War, criticized South African presidents Thabo Mbeki and Jacob Zuma. He was an outspoken champion for human rights.
