Although small in number, estimated to be about 2% of the adult population in the United States, the Afro-Latino population has been and continues to be immensely influential in the lived experiences of Black people in the Western hemisphere and beyond. Deeply rooted in the colonial experience in Latin America, most identify as Hispanic or Latino but not all. Both of these terms (Hispanic and Latino) refer to historical or geographic origin. Hispanic means individuals who come from a country where Spanish is the primary langauge. Latino refers to individuals from anywhere in Latin America, which includes Mexico, Central and South America. Afro-Latino is a term which focuses on race, skin tone and other factors and how these socio-cultural realities shaped their experience.
