Howard University, known as the Mecca, is one of the most prestigious HBCUs in the country. Charted in 1867 and named for the first administrator of the Freedmen's Bureau, General Oliver Otis Howard, Howard University has played a outsized role in the social, political, cultural, economic and racial discourse of the United States. The fact that U.S. Presidents, for over one hundred years, have either visited the campus or spoken at its commencements speaks to Howard's importance as a national and international leader in higher education.
