Sweet "Poppa Lou Donaldson, bandleader, composer and saxphonist, was the final surviving member of the original Art Blakey quintet. Blakey's quintet is crfedited with introducing "hard bop" into jazz lingo. Donaldson was also a pioneer in soul jazz, which was a merger of jazz with blues, gospel, and R&B elements.
Donaldson was known for his rich and soulful tone and grove influenced sound. He made jazz more accesible and danceable. His innovative work is featured on albums like Alligator Bogaloo and Blues Walk. His work helped to expand the music's reach and develop a broader audience.
Donaldson is also credited with launching the career of Clifford Brown, a gifted pianist who was just 25 when he was killed in a car accident in 1956. Donaldson was also present for some of pianist Horace Silver's best sessions.
