On Feb 22, 1979: Saint Lucia gained partial independence from the U.K. remaining a parliamentary democracy within the Commonwealth. The 1st election, left-leaning Saint Lucia Labour Party defeated the more conservative United Workers' Party. Sir John Compton became the 1st Prime Minister.
