On 12 June 2020, Rayshard Brooks, an unarmed Black man, was shot twice in the back and killed as he fled from police in Atlanta, Georgia.
Brooks, a 27-year-old father of a young daughter, got into a struggle with police in the car park of a Wendy's restaurant after he failed a sobriety test. One officer attempted to point a tazer at him, so Brooks grabbed the tazer and ran. While running away, he did discharge the tazer, but did not hit the pursuing officer. As he continued to run, the officer aimed his gun and shot the now completely unarmed Brooks repeatedly in the back. Two police officers were then seen standing over Brooks' injured body, not providing any medical assistance. After witnesses complained to a third officer, they then began to provide medical aid. But Brooks later died in hospital after surgery.
The killing took place amidst a wave of nationwide protests against other police murders of unarmed Black people. The following day, protests broke out in Atlanta during which the Wendy's was burned down.
