On 23 January 1976, actor, singer, anti-fascist and communist Paul Robeson died in Philadelphia, aged 77.

Robeson had been blacklisted in the US for his political views, resulting in his losing his career, moving abroad, and beginning to suffer from ill-health. In 1963 he was forced to return to the US because of his poor health
