Opposition to Busing in Boston, 1974

The Boston busing controversy turned violent in the spring of 1976. On April 5, a group of white high school students from South Boston and Charlestown who were opposed to busing visited City Hall to meet with a councilwoman who supported their boycott of classes. Outside the building, the teenagers encountered and then assaulted labor lawyer Theodore Landsmark. The attack sparked a series of violent racial incidents that extended into the summer. Sept 12, 1974: Opposition to court-ordered school busing in Boston, MA, turned violent the 1st day of classes. White mobs pelted school buses carrying Black children with eggs, bricks and bottles. Police clashed with the mob to maintain order. Some of the white kids didn’t mind going to school with Black kids. It was the parents that had the problem…
