On 17 March 1768 enslaved people in Montserrat, a British colony in the Caribbean, planned an uprising.
As the majority of the population of the colony was Irish, the rebels chose the date of St Patrick's Day for the rising.
The plan was for enslaved domestic workers at Government House to seize weapons during the festivities, while enslaved people elsewhere would arm themselves with sticks and stones and whatever they could find.
However, a white domestic servant overheard two men discussing the plans, and reported them. Nine enslaved people were subsequently executed as alleged ringleaders, and 30 others were jailed and later banished to other islands.
In 1985, March 17 was made a national holiday in commemoration of the events.
