

The Million Man March took place on October 16, 1995 in Washington, DC. The march was called by Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan. The National African American Leadership Summit, a national civil rights group worked with a number of Black organizations to coordinate the event. Some of those organizations included the Nation of Islam, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), Urban League and the National African American Leadership Council led by Benjamin Chavis. More than 1 millon man were estimated to attend the event.
The event took place against the backdrop of the Day of Absence. Organized by women to encourage Black Americans not involved in the march to stay away fron school and work and engage in other benefical activities to support the march.
